Idaho Steelhead and Salmon Fishing
Back to Fishing
All of the Idaho steelhead and salmon fishing action occurs on the Clearwater, Salmon and Snake rivers in Central and North Central Idaho near Riggins, Lewiston, Orofino, Salmon and Stanley. Timing is critical. Steelhead seasons kick in late September or early October, and then again in the early spring before the rivers begin to flood. Salmon fishing occurs in May and June. Watch the Idaho Department of Fish and Game web site for the latest information on seasons and bag limits.
Idaho fishing outfitters and guides are critical to your success. They know what lures/flies to use, and most importantly, where to fish. They're out there fishing every day, and they know where they caught fish just the day before. They've also got the ideal crafts for the job. Take your pick – a drift boat, in which a guide can help you fish every square foot of the river, as you drift downstream, or a jet boat, which can go upstream and downstream to fish productive holes. Both crafts can be very effective in trolling lures as well.
